Return of the brunch, international MBA edition

A year after the most recent post, the two western MBA brunchers met in Whistler for a Saturday morning feast. Given the vagaries of the international location, Saturday felt just right.

There was, as always, a guest bruncher, an aspiring gardener from California. While the focus was reunion, the brunch won us over. A decadent ham and brie stuffed French toast stopped the guest cold in her tracks. The veterans went for the local specialties of fish benedict - showing some camaraderie in splitting the lox crab bounty. First, though, we began with shooters of some odd fruit juice. The crazy canucks made us believe that it was a local delight - who were we to disagree?

After plenty of coffee refills, sampling and catching up of the news we looked around to discover that we had closed down the brunchery. The staff sat around waiting for us to finish up, and wait they did as we decided to toast with an extra cup of coffee.

you all know i don't like to play favorites, but this past brunch was absolutely divine. yes, the waiter had a bit of an at-ti-tude, but annette kept him in check. yes, the mini-scones took approximately 8 hours to arrive at our table, but they were oh-so-delicious. and the prawns, well, i'll let you judge for yourselves.

special highlights: welcome, sarah c! next time please bring jim from the office. sara s. reminded us all why it's best to let the voicemail pick up when the "doctor" calls. and aaron and annette provided the post-brunch club entertainment that, frankly, was better than any door prize i could have imagined. the way i look at it, we're all winners.

No, Lee, that was not meant to have a double meaning, but simply to celebrate last weekend's special Brunch Club at the Big Apple Backyard Barbeque. In attendence were Lee, Adam, me, Sara and special Brunch Club guests Lilly, Matt, Pat, Will, and Sara G. Some of us learned a little tai chi, some of us drank some chai tea, and we had a lovely day - no one left hungry. We missed everyone who was getting married/marrying people off, and we especially missed Billy, but you were with us in voicemail-spirit.

Hey Brunchers - I miss you!
I know we've all been busy thinking about America and being patriotic on Memorial Day etc... But it's time to get back in business. And we need to do what we do best - brunch.

I propose a brunch club picnic in the park this Sunday in order to celebrate summer, the limited return of a founding member and the last few good months we have with several departing members. Feel free to invite the uninitiated new member-in-training as well as other potentials and/or friends and loved ones - the park is a big place and we don't need a reservation.

If you're down - let's all figure out how we can potluck it up.

He's just too much! But yeah, heads up that the hot spots will be hella crowded....)

And then I have 3 bridal/wedding type things. Crikey, my next BC isn't till June 10! Good grief! I might develop some type of unsightly palsy! We really might have to do a Tuesday Brunch somewhere! I think we can reasonably assume that Mr. Wilde never went to Brunch Club at Schiller's Liquor Bar, where we converged on sunday to recount the goings-on of our nights before (some of us, ahem Paul, had to be reminded of our behavior, some of which, ahem, involved fighting with an open umbrella and flip flops on his hands). The brunch was spectacular, by far one of my favorite meals. We started with a basket of freshly baked pastries and various sundry brioche, all topped off with a slather of nutella. Erica arrived just in time to eat a meticulously selected omelette with cheese and fresh herbs. Annette and Paul had the huevos, and the rest of us, well whatever...i know what you're all really here to find out about... so without further adieu.........

Good times, and good turnout, especially considering the cumulative volume of alcohol absorbed, and raucous revelry indulged in, on Friday and Saturday nights....

...speaking of which... Annette gets BC06 Gold Star of the week for taking on her very own "Project Runway"-esque fashion challenge in order to join us for brunch. And she conquered it with grace and flair! Just look at that minty green color coordination!

Yes, indeed, that is the waitress who maniacally cackled to herself while totaling our bill, leading us all to have heart palpitations and anxiety about the fact that we could never, ever, in a million years prove that those Chinese stamps did NOT add up to $47 per person. A sigh of relief was breathed when it turned out to be $10 a head. Erica, we owe you $1.

Last weekend in lieu of making a guest appearance at brunch with Luxmundito, I realized that Lux would likely flee the scene so I decided to follow the tracks. My investigative hunt kept me on hot on the trail, and I found myself on a beach with the sun shining down.

After a thorough search of the area, I was unable to snare the elusive Lux, although I tracked down a wonderful serving of fish and chips, replete with corn fritters. Brunchalicious.

I'll be back on the hunt again soon, disguised, as always, as the innocent American bruncher. That's right Lux, hear the footsteps, we're-a-coming...

last sunday, lee and i took a jaunt down memory lane (and Rt 95) to meet our friend rob for brunch at one of our favorite restaurants in providence, the Modern Diner. Although this classic diner car from 1941 doesn't exactly match its name, Modern Diner devotees (adam, back me up here) all agree that their huge menu is anything but antiquated. Their special dishes include ricotta lemon pancakes, lobster Benedict, cream cheese and blueberry-stuffed French Toast, and French Toast with custard sauce and fresh berries. Rob and I had some sort of fabulous omelette with spinach and tasty items, and Lee had some sort of mushroom/brie cheese dish (lee please jump in here, can't seem to remember the particulars). it was a great brunch and i can't wait until y'all come to providence to go there with us!

Wow, this is amazing! I don't know what to say... Gosh, well, I just want to thank the whole cast and crew of Brunchage À Trois: La Roast Française, this is for you. I mean, it's for me, obviously, but you know what I'm saying.

Thank you, thank you, thank you times trois to my phenomenal costars, Paul and Yoni. This movie really should have been called Brokeback Brunchin'. You came all the way from Brooklyn and listened to me kvetch about applications, you're just the best.

Thanks to all the supporting cast, especially those guys who walked like gazelles, one of them had a diagonal zipper on his jacket, your style and grace are an inspiration. Also the guys at the next table who had these giant bowls of cappuccino, I ordered a cappuccino but just got a normal cup, I have to figure out what you ordered and get it next time.

Thank you to the incredible chef and kitchen staff at French Roast, my Omelette Lorraine was delicious.

And I'd like to say that really, I think the warm gruyere cheese was the real winner here today, without that cheese, Poni and I would just not have been able to enjoy our brunches as much as we did. In addition to being in my omelette, it was also in Yoni's brunchovegotarian omelette, which he split with Paul, along with a lox and bagel platter.

Thank you to Luxmundito for not coming, I think it's much better that way.

I'd like to thank BC06 for scheduling it to be so close to my apartment, it really meant a lot to me and was just such a beautiful thing. I love you all.

To all the other nominees, I'm not really sure why you couldn't make it, I mean it's right on the F line and like ten minutes from all the Manhattanites, but you know, I really respect your work and I couldn't think of a more incredible group to be included in.

Anyhoo... today's Brunch Clubbers decided we didn't need Cafeteria's snotty Chelsea attitude (translation: missed the window of opportunity for group seating). Braving nippy winds and bright blue skies (which would have been more enjoyable without a hangover), we made our way up 7th Ave to Elmo, and basked under the benevolent gaze of its bizarre mural characters:

Clocking in at $14, Elmo's brunch was highly satisfactory. I had the Tex Mex, the guy at the next table had French toast that looked amazing, and I have no memory of anyone else's food, except that Annette lent me ketchup. I'm so self-centered. OK here's pictures of happy brunchers.

hi everyone! we had an awesome weekend here in boston with our special guest, annette, who is a dynamic woman in business. after an evening of bowling at boston's high class Boston Bowl (where lee and annette purchased the most lovely gift for me, pics to come soon) and an... interesting...dinner of pizza and shrimp cocktail sauce, we didn't want to overdo it with brunch. so we went and had a delicious brunch ever at the Fireplace in Brookline. our meals were excellent (complete with biscuit girl and biscuit girl redux!) - we started off with a parsnip soup with an apple glaze, and annette and lee both had something crispy, and i snuck lots of tastes when lee wasn't looking.

in all, it was a great weekend, and it was excellent to see you, annette!

The Last BC06 of January

With some members traveling to exotic Northeastern locales and others engaged in academic pursuits, this Sunday’s BC06 was an intimate affair. Erica, Sara, Yoni, Yoni’s cousin Dana and myself were in attendance. Because Kate, our resident Aussie, was not brunching, authenticity prevented us from dining at the Sunburnt Cow as planned. Instead, we headed to nearby Esperanto for a Latin-inspired meal. While not the most delicious brunch we have experienced, Esperanto gets points for its very reasonable price ($9.99 for coffee/drink/entrée). Aside from its thriftiness, this Sunday’s BC06 was notable because Yoni came out to his cousin, who was in town from Israel. Dana responded to his revelation supportively, but also noted, hilariously, that Yoni was “putting a lot of pressure on [her] uterus”. Other topics of conversation included the GMAT, bootleg luxury goods and the previous night’s drunkeness.

So who’s going to Boston next weekend? Yoni and I will be taking the Chinatown bus up Saturday morning. BC06 does Boston! Good times!

Unrelated to brunch, but while we're on the topic of culcha: I went to the opening last night for a show of David Shapiro's work (friend of my roommate), and I highly recommend checking out his fantastic watercolors of famous people. Titles of these paintings: "Lady with a Kinkajou: Paris and Babyluv" and "Madonna and Child of the Future: Angelina and Maddox." At Kathleen Cullen on 26th st.

It has taken me sometime to post on the blog but now I am in full gear. Sorry for the delay.

School started yesterday and I am in the LOT-EK studio which will be going to Moscow and St Petersburg in March. I will make sure to do a special Moscow brunch post and bring back some fantastic door prizes.

A big congratulations to our to most recently impressive brunch-club-yuppies-in-training. Annette got a new job (so I'm told) and Paul got in to Harvard. I am both so Impressed. Forbes & Harvard. I think you guys should pay for brunch this weekend. Could our little group be more impressive? I think not. Fuck all the other brunch clubs, they do not have as many intials behind their names (we'll even have an esquire in a year or two).

Because I don't know my 401(k) from my hot brunch spots, I'll just throw out two previously mentioned names for brunch this weekend to get the controversy started.

At the end of this week I'm planning to post BC06's Brunch Wishlist, a compilation of brunch spots we all want to check out. We've got some good suggestions so far, but if any of you have places you want included, holla in the comments.

A few take-away points from the first BC06:
1) Eating at the bar is hip and fun, provided the group is small enough. It also allows BC06'ers to do abdominal workouts throughout the meal.
2) Scarlett Johansson is a curvaceous temptress, but might be played-out
3) Having intimate horse-human relations can be deadly (Adam may have a link for this one)
4) Public is very well-designed and has excellent lighting
5) Annette got tan/dirty over vacation
6) Erica has the cellphone of a Texas football legends

Is everyone else as excited as I am about Christine's visit this weekend?

west coast brunch woes

Happy New Year, BC dudes and dudettes. I am happy to be back in New York after a wonderful week in the Pacific Northwest. Although I was content with the nine feet of snow on the beautiful and volcanic Mt. Hood (pictured) that fulfilled all my ski cravings, I must say that the west coast brunch options in no way live up to our fine standards. Although I faithfully returned to all my favorite Seattle coffee spots -- the reliable Victrola, the incomparable Vivace, and the exciting newcomer Tip Top Doughnuts -- there seems to be a pandemic lack of sufficient a.m. dining spots throughout the far west of this great nation. Sure, the coffee is fantastic (New York coffee wishes it could be so good), but I have come to realize that there simply is no brunch equivalent. And frankly, installing wi-fi access in every eating establishment does not compensate for a lack of Eggs Benedict. We should all be thankful for the rich bounty of brunch spots that we are so lucky to have here at home. God bless.

hey everyone! just got back from a New Year's weekend in VT. we had a lovely time - erica went cross-country skiing, made mimosas for everyone, and then passed out in the hot tub. the rest of us welcomed the new year in with a quiet sudoku and puzzle. in all, we had a wonderful time - but of course i miss you all! best wishes to you... and here's hoping that 2006 brings as many lovely brunches as 2005!

Regional Brunching Varieties: SoCal Edition

Yoni and I are back from sunny Southern California and are excited to resume brunching NYC style. While in the Woody family homeland of San Diego (actually, the northern suburbs, but whatever) we were treated to brunches that incorporated regional flavor, including lots of citrus. A special treat came in the form of Jane Woody's famous juevos rancheros, which involve Rice-a-Roni instant Spanish Rice. Also, you'll all be happy to know that my mom refers to us as "the Brunch Bunch" and my dad thinks we are an "interesting and fun crew" based on the holiday party pictures.

So where will the first BC06 be held?

Yesterday, Paul called up and sounded very excited, as I too would have been if I had found Jake Shears's phone at the airport. The phone contained gems such as Kylie and Anderson Cooper's digits as well as text messages from David Furnish's assistant from the wedding.

So of course I called my friend Pam, who I think you all know and is finishing up law school at UVA. Pam, though excited about our Christmas miracle, was less interested in this turn of events than the idea that finally, after three years' worth of pleas, I would finally come down to Charlottesville for dinner. So I convinced my mom to lend me her new car and of course this happened:

Damn rednecks. Jay, a nice skoal-chewing 19-year-old kid in his dad's Volvo, rear-ended me while my car was completely stopped. So thanks Jay, and thanks Pam, and thanks Paul, and thanks Jake Shears and THANK YOU JESUS. Without all of whom this never would have happened.

Welcome to the premiere of our aggressive PR campaign to land a Thursday Styles article in the New York Times. Beyond the inevitable fame and fortune, we hope that this blog will become a watering hole for those of us in NYC and far from it to share pictures, stories, food/waiter reviews, and tide us over until the next time we brunch again.

Below are some pictures from the First Annual Brunch Club Holiday Party. Even though this wasn’t a brunch, per se, my competitive nature forces me to rate everything. I give the party a 10. Ricky’s apartment was lovely, the service was fast and friendly, and the food was delicious. I’m sorry I forgot to leave a tip. To start off conversation, I thought we could have a topic – what did everyone think of their Secret Santa presents? Maybe you could post pictures of yourself using your gift?
